Abega hails Hayatou FIFA bid
Former Cameroon captain Theophile Abega has hailed Issa Hayatou`s decision to run for FIFA presidential elections in May.
Hayatou, 55, announced he would challenge FIFA president Seep Blatter at the polls in Seoul on May 29, and Abega, who led the Indomitable Lions to their first African Nations Cup success in Ivory Coast, said he was set to lead the campaign for Hayatou`s elections.
He said in Yaounde: "The world has to protect the sport and its fundamental values of ethics and fair play and I feel Hayatou`s candidacy is one for sporting ethics."
Earlier, the president of Cameroon Football Federation Iya Mohammed had urged African national football associations to back Hayatou`s candidacy.
He said: "Hayatou`s achievements as CAF president, and his experience in football management has shown he can do the job."
But already there have been cracks in the African set-up with Liberia and Zimbabwe rooting for Blatter and many African Football chiefs not willing to commit themselves.
