CAN 2008: Indomitable Lions Revue Strategies
Their first training camp for the nations cup ends today in Germany.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will today in Germany wrap-up their first training session under the auspices of head coach Otto Pfister. The training camp currently going on at the German resort town of Herzogenaurach brings together both local and foreign based players. Among the foreign based players, is Samuel Eto’o Fils who is returning into the Lions den after close to six months. The three times African player of the year last played for his country in Monrovia (Liberia) on June 3, 2007 during the fourth day of play of the African Nations Cup qualifiers. During the encounter, the Lions beat the Liberians 2-1 with the Barcelona striker re-iterating his exploits by netting in the second and victorious goal for the Lions. His come back after a serious injury is not only a great relieve to most soccer fans, his team mates and the technical staff, but also a show of patriotism and great commitment to his fatherland.
On the technical bench, it is also the first time the trio composed of Otto Pfister, Gweha Ikouam and Thomas Nkono are meeting since their appointment. Otto Pfister whose contract with the Sudanese club side ends on November 24, joined the squad yesterday. For their first regrouping, twenty-four of the twenty-six players called to camp have responded present. The only two absences are Jean II Makoun because of injury and Etame Mayer who is still to change his mind with regards to wearing the Lions jersey again.
Of the twenty-four present, there are four new foreign based players who have made their entry into the elite squad. These include; Binya Gilles, Guy Madjo, Assou-Ekotto and Emile Bamba. Two other old names, Joel Epalle and Tomou Bayard are making their come back after years of absence. To give a chance to home-based players, six of them are part of the Herzogenaurach expedition. Amongst them are; N’nouck Minka, Ndjana Kana and Kingue of Coton Sport of Garoua, Zé Bertin and Mbarga Janvier of Canon of Yaounde and Bassombeng Eric of Astres of Douala.
From the actors to the field of play, report say, apart from discipline being the watch word, the Lions have been having three training sessions a day since their arrival in the town of Herzogenaurach, headquarters of Puma, the team’s equipment provider. Headed by Captain Song, their training seasons are centred on theoretical lessons on what is expected, the physical up-keep and tactical play style.
