German coach Daum accused of racism
ISTANBUL,
An official from struggling Turkish giants Besiktas accused their controversial German coach Christoph Daum of racism during a stormy club meeting on Saturday, Anatolia news agency reported.
"He (Daum) does not like the Africans. He never liked neither Pascal Nouma nor (Ike) Shorunmu," Latif Akca said, quoted by the Anatolia news agency.
Both French striker Nouma and Nigerian goalkeeper Shorunmu left the Istanbul outfit earlier this year.
Tension ran high at the meeting over other issues as well, primarily the club`s financial troubles, leading club President Serdar Bilgili to storm out, Anatolia said.
Last month Bilgili brokered a last-minute compromise between the club and Daum after the German coach submitted his resignation following sharp criticism over a series of poor results this season.
Besiktas are currently fifth in the Turkish league, far behind their traditional rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, who hold the first and second places respectively.
Daum took over from Italian coach Nevio Scala last season as his career at home nosedived when he tested postive for cocaine after denying press allegations he had been taking the drug.
The affair cost him his job at the helm of Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen and the prospect of taking over the German national team.
