Cameroon confirm coaching trio for U-20 campaign
Cameroon`s ministry of sports has appointed three new coaches in their bid to qualify for next year`s U-20 African Nations Cup finals in Nigeria.
Head coach Lucien Nanga will be assisted by Paul Fon Ndanga, with Pierre Mbarga taking up a new position of goalkeeping trainer. The trio replace former coaches Gweha Ikouam Fils and Paul Oyono Ndongo.
Gweha was heavily criticised last year when the team crashed out of the African Nations finals in Ethiopia after the first round. He was accused of giving preference to youth players from foreign teams over those playing regularly at home.
The new coaches are graduates of the National Youth and Sports Institute. Nanga comes from the first batch of the higher football specialisation section that graduated last year. He gained experience as assistant coach in Tonnerre Yaounde.
Ndanga furthered his training in Germany like many other graduates from that school. Mbarga was formerly coach of the South province. Cameroon won the African Nations in 1999 in Nigeria under Jean Manga Onguene, before suffering their humiliation in Ethiopia last year.
The 2003 Nations Cup campaign was to begin this weekend with a qualifier against Sao Tome and Pricipe. However, the opposition withdrew and Cameroon will wait for the draw to know their next opponents.
