Cycling: Cameroon Defends Title in Côte d’Ivoire
Joseph Sanda began defending his title at the tour of the East of Côte d’Ivoire which kicked off last Tuesday.
The 21st edition of the International Tour of the East in Cote d’Ivoire kicked off last Tuesday with the winner of last year’s edition, Joseph Sanda defending his title. According to the director of the company organising the race, Georges Adou, there will be 54 cyclists from nine teams, two of which are from the host country, Cote d’Ivoire. The other participating countries include Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon
The race will be run over a distance of 860km and the cyclists will be transported over a distance of 1318km, making a total race course of 2178km. The 12-day race will comprise 11 stages and there will be one day of rest. Five towns have been retained for the race including Bondoukou, Abengourou, Daoukro, Yamoussoukro and Abidjan.
It would be recalled that Cameroon dominated the 20th edition of the race last year. Sanda Joseph, Teguimaha Sadrack, Douala Flaubert, Tekou Damien, and Tega Martinien all of the SNH velo-club, took turns to lead the race. The average speed of the Cameroonian team ranged between 45 and 55 kilometres an hour.
Cameroon is therefore taking part in the race this year with the intention to conserve the first position they occupied during the 20th edition of the race last year. However, Cameroon has to be careful with the Burkinabé team which had dominated the race before now and are determined to bounce back to the limelight. The race will equally serve as preparation for Cameroonian cyclists ahead of the Grand Prix Chantal Biya which Cameroon has vowed to organise and win.
