Cameroon key player penpics
YAOUNDE
Penpics of key players for Group E contenders Cameroon:
RIGOBERT SONG
Age: 25
Position: Defender
Club: FC Cologne (Ger)
Will be hoping to enjoy a red-card free World Cup which will be a first as he has been sent-off in the last two earning the dubious title of being the youngest player ever to be sent off in a finals aged 17 in 1994.
Has enjoyed far happier experiences at the African Nations Cup being part of the last two titlewinning sides - scoring the winning penalty in 2000 - and captaining the side this time round when they beat Senegal in a penalty shootout.
Robust defender who made his name at French side Metz before somewhat surprisingly being snapped up by Liverpool where he soon fell out of favour and a move to West Ham also failed to win him praise among English Premiership fans.
This season has seen him fail to help Cologne stay up though he has not had a bad campaign himself and has seemingly improved his disciplinary record which led him to boast after the Nations Cup that with just one booking he had come of age - hopefully for the Indomitable Lions he is not tempting fate and about to realise an unwanted hat-trick.
PATRICK MBOMA
Age: 31
Position: Striker
Club: Sunderland (Eng)
If Cameroon are to get anywhere near their performance of reaching the last eight in 1990 they will have to hope Mboma is fit to play for them. Struggling with a nagging heel injury which has plagued him since the middle of the African Nations Cup finals there are doubts over whether he will make it or not.
However having scored three times in the four opening matches for Cameroon as they successfully defended their title showed how important he is to a side that finds it hard to score goals at the rarefied level of World Cup finals.
Voted African player of the year in 2000 following his performances in the African Nations Cup finals and then the Olympics winning sides he has failed to shine at club level since eventually being loaned by Parma to Sunderland this season where he has played just one full match.p
A bohemian career which has taken him from France to Japan then to Italy and now England he has retained his humble attitude to the success he has enjoyed by refusing to wear the number nine shirt at national level by legend Roger Milla - what Cameroon would do for a fully-fit Mboma to repeat Milla`s heroics of the 1990 finals in Japan this time round.
LAUREN
Age: 25
Position: Midfield/Defence
Club: Arsenal (Eng)
Could have played for Spain having been brought up there from the age of three but opted for Cameroon where he was born. Has earned his place in the Arsenal line-up and shown authority usually on the right side of defence this season, though he is used in midfield by his country.p
Showed he had the right temperament for the Prmeiership when he stepped up four minutes from the end of the April 7 derby with Spurs and slotted home a penalty to give Arsenal a vital three points as they chased the double.
Made his name at Spanish side Real Mallorca where he was outstanding as they reached the 1999 Cup Winners Cup final but lost to Lazio and a member of the last two African Nations Cup winning sides has made him one of the most respected defenders in African football.
Calm and composed with a good delivery of the ball his first round opponents will find it a tough task beating him and he will be dreaming of making such an impression that he will earn his dream move to Real Madrid by the end of the tournament.Hits: 1 | Source:Allafrica
