Trophies For Holiday Tournament
Holiday sports are fast becoming crowd pullers in the country particularly in the capital city. Thousands of Yaounde city dwellers thronged the Omnisports annex stadium last Sunday to witness the finals of the 2002 edition of the "Semences Olympique"- Iya Mohamed holiday tournament. The tournament which lasted for 10 days, brought together all the eight football training centres affiliated to the Semences Olympique —Iya Mohamed training centre in Yaounde. The youths who are all below 17 years of age once more proved to their parents and onlookers that they are a force to reckon with as far as football is concerned.
Three important final matches were played in the various categories: the ward, the minor, and the cadet categories. After a brilliant display of high football skills, trophies were awarded to the winners. The trophy for the ward category went to Semences Olympic, A S Nkomkana won the trophy for the minors while the Semences Olympic cadet team won the trophy for their category. Consolation prizes were also given to all the other teams that did not make it to the top. According to Ndzana Robert of the Ministry of Youth and Sport, who represented the Minister, the initiative of having football training centres is worth encouraging. He said that the Ministry of Youth and Sports gives the possibility for these clubs to train monitoring them during tournaments because the Ministry is aware of the fact that these centres provide high quality players for the national team.
Speaking briefly to the press after the tournament, the President of Semences Olympique football training centre (CFFSO) Pascal Atangana, said the tournament takes place in three sequences: the Christmas sequence, the Easter sequence and the Holiday sequence. He explained that this tournament corresponds with the long vacation because they estimate that their players are attending schools and they also believe that if the children are educated, they can better assimilate football training lessons. He further explained that the holiday period has been chosen so as not to disturb national championships. "That is why our championships do not go beyond ten days." he concluded.
