Indomitable Lions Stagger in Khartoum (12.10.2004)
Last Saturday’s draw places Cameroon in an uncomfortable third position in Group Three.
Cameroon’s hope of winning a ticket for the World Cup 2006 in Germany is gradually dwindling. After losing to Egypt 2-3 in Cairo last month, the Indomitable Lions played a 1-1 draw last Saturday with the Falcons of Sudan at the El Merriekh stadium-Omdurman, situated some 25km from Khartoum. The match counted for the fifth and last playing day of the first phase of the joint World Cup/African Nations Cup eliminatories. It was a crucial match for the Indomitable Lions as they needed a victory to propel them to the top of Group Three and thus restore confidence in their fans. As for the Sudanese, last Saturday’s match was the first to be played in the newly constructed 30,000 capacity El Merriekh stadium. It was the wish of most Sudanese to inaugurate the stadium with a victory.
Prior to the match, some Sudanese had predicted victory for Cameroon as they lauded praises on the Lions each time Captain Song and his mates passed through the town for training. The Lions training sessions were watched by a huge crowd as if they were competitive matches. The Indomitable Lions went into the match without some of their key players such as Samuel Eto’o Fils, Idrissou Mohomadou and Ndefi Pius who were sick. Ndefi sustained an injury during the last training session on Friday. This notwithstanding, Winfried Schaefer’s boys played with a lot of vigour and determination to grab the three points from the Sudanese. But this determination did not last long. The Falcons, galvanized by a powerful home crowd, took control of the match a few minutes later with a series of long passes and a good collective style of play. At the defence, they were able to ward off any attacks from the
Indomitable Lions. This strategy paid off for the home side as Faisal Agab Sido was able to pierce through the Lions’ defence wall to drive home the curtain raiser at the 17th minute. This situation brought panic into the Lions’ camp. The Sudanese played with confidence not minding their position in the group. The Indomitable Lions mounted pressure on the Sudanese but they squandered all their scoring opportunities. The attack machinery of the Lions lacked finishing. Coach Winfried Schafer was quick to make replacements at the 20th minute when he brought in Douala Mbella of Sporting Lisbon to replace Bill Tchato. This added more life to the defence. Despite the pressure mounted on the Sudanese by the Lions, they could not equalize. Half time score was 1-0 in favour of Sudan.
The Indomitable Lions came back in to the second half stronger and more determined with some replacements at the midfield and the attack. Mbami Modest took the place of Guy Fetchine, while Toumou Rayard who plays for Xiamen China, replaced Tum Herve who was just a mere shadow of himself. The Lions mounted more pressure on the Sudanese but the Sudanese keeper was very vigilant. The Indomitable Lions however pressed on and this pressure resulted to Job Desire heading in the equalizer for Cameroon two minutes into extra time after benefiting from a pass from Atouba Timothee. After the goal, the Lions, who seemed to have waken up from slumber, were only stopped by the blast of the referee’s final whistle. It was too late for the Lions. At stoppage time the score board read,1-1. Cameroon now occupies an uncomfortable third position with eight points. Cote d’Ivoire is leading the group with 12 points, Libya is second with 10 points, Egypt seven, Benin and Sudan close the table with two points each.
