Lions, Shattered Dream (10.10.2005)
Generalised grief grips Cameroonians as the Lions fail to grab a fifth consecutive World Cup ticket.
Many Cameroonians consider light rain before or during an important event as a sign of good tidings. The heavy down pour of last Saturday afternoon in Yaounde was however considered by many as harbinger of ill omen. True. It was in bad weather, that Cameroon failed to grab a ticket for the next World Cup in Germany after a one all tie with Egypt. The team needed a victory to pick the lone World Cup ticket of Group 3. But they finished the joint World Cup/African Cup of Nations qualification race with 21 points, one point behind Group leaders, Côte d’Ivoire (22 pts). As second best in Group three, the gates of Egypt for the African Cup of Nations next year have been flung open. But the dream of making it to the World Cup for the fifth consecutive time has been shattered.
Many people are questioning what actually went wrong with the Lions who were so confident throughout their training camp and at the start of the encounter. They also had the blessing of the entire population. For the first time in the history of Cameroon football, all those going to the stadium were active supporters, rather than just passive spectators. The dominant green outfits at the stadium was there to show. The Head of State had also pledged special bonuses to the players in case of a victory. In addition, food was given to appease the population of Mfandena (quarter where the stadium is located) and an ecumenical prayer said a few hours to the match to bless the team.
The defeat therefore came as a surprise to many people, especially those who had observed a remarkable progress in the team during their last four
outings. A shock wave ran through the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium when central referee, Coulibaly Koman, sounded his final whistle. The joy and excitement noticed during the first half of the encounter and after the curtain raiser of Rudolf Douala gave way after the equaliser by Egypt’s Mohammed Shawky and then turned to grief when Pierre Wome Nlend missed a penalty in the last minute of additional time. There was generalised consternation. Fans wept openly. Even the players could not hold back their emotions as many broke into tears and laid helpless on the pitch. Their grieve was understandable. It is the dream of every professional footballer to play the World Cup.
The grief of some supporters was quickly transformed into anger as they sought to attack the players for not granting them a World Cup ticket. The Lions were therefore obliged to stay in the dressing room for over two hours after the end of the match to avoid being attacked by their fans. But for the timely intervention of the forces of law and order who stepped in to disperse the irate fans, the situation would have degenerated. Some radical supporters even tore the green supporters’ T-shirts and took to the streets around the stadium. They used sticks and stones to destroy a few car windows. Several cases of injury were transported to hospitals in Yaounde. Luckily, the medical corps was mobilised and gave immediate assistance to all those in distress.
