Angola Will Host 2010 Nations Cup (05.09.2006)
Hosts for 2012 and 2014 editions of the Nations Cup were also designated yesterday.
Everybody had expected just the host of the 2010 African Cup of Nations to be designated yesterday by the Executive committee of the Confederation of African Football, CAF. However, in a rare decision yesterday evening in Cairo, the 13-members of the executive committee of CAF unanimously designated the hosts for three editions of the competition - 2010, 2012 and 2014 African Cup of Nations. Following the decision, Angola will host the 2010 Nations Cup, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea the 2012 edition and Libya will receive the 2014 tournament.
The decision to designate hosts for three editions was justified by the high quality of bid presented by the four contenders. The examination of the presentations and reports by the inspection group which visited the five candidate countries - Libya, Gabon / Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Angola — proved that all candidates fulfil the requirements and have fully respected the specifications. Although Nigeria was not retained as host for the Nations Cup, the West African nation has been designated as a substitute organising country that would take the place of any country unable to fulfil its commitment. Taking into consideration the potentials of Nigeria, CAF also committed to support the country’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup U-17 in 2009, which FIFA allocated already to Africa.
The designation of the hosts of three editions is also the first move to concretise a plan for the long-term development of African football and the improvement of the

infrastructure for sports on the continent. This procedure is an integral part of CAF’s new policy for the development and the commercialisation of the competitions. This requires the implementation of contracts for a minimum period of six years, spanning three editions of the African Cup of Nations. This will allow the owners of the TV and marketing rights to become acquainted early enough with the venues of the competitions and to fine-tune their commercial and broadcasting strategies.
The long term programming, it is believed, will enable the host to meticulously prepare for the event. According to CAF, the activities required to prepare and to organise, at its best, the African Cup of Nations take up significant time and need considerable financial and material resources. Therefore, it is not just useful, but rather indispensable, for the organising countries to set deadlines corresponding to the objectives. These should be no shorter than six years. "The African Cup of Nations has become a major international sporting event and a competition at a very high level. Today, the planning of its organisation requires also activities for the construction or renovation of the necessary infrastructures (stadiums, hotels, airports, transport by road and air, telecommunications, health etc.). The same applies to every aspect concerning media coverage, the audiovisual elements, and marketing operations", the communiqué states.
From 2010 on, CAF will return to its normal rhythm of attributing the African Cup of Nations (2016) edition after edition in accordance with the required six-year time- frame.
