Basketball: Why Non Yaounde Teams Lost (10.09.2003)
The lack of adequate training infrastructure is a great handicap to players in the hinterland.
The basketball season ended in the country last Sunday with the final matches in the junior, women and men’s categories. It was a real national final as the teams came from virtually all parts of Cameroon; Adamawa, Far North, West and Centre provinces. Spectators were kept on their toes as all matches were embedded with suspense from the beginning to the end. The spectacle was a real feast for the eyes. But at the end of the day, teams from Yaounde - Phi-Slama-Jama for the junior, INJS for the ladies and BEAC for the seniors, proved their supremacy. They grabbed all the trophies.
Putting aside the immediate cause of failure, that is tiredness after a tedious journey to the capital city on the day of the match itself for the teams from Ngaoundere and Maroua, several other reasons have been put forward to justify the poor performances of teams out of Yaounde.
Judging from the fierce resistance put up by Honobe of Maroua in the junior series, Black Like Me of Bafoussam in the ladies category and NUBA of Ngaoundéré in the seniors, it is
not the talent that is lacking. These teams dominated their matches for the greater part of the encounter and only saw their dreams shattered in the last phase of the matches. The inability of the teams to maintain a victory, was blamed on immaturity. Immaturity caused by the absence of adequate infrastructure for training; the lack of activity due to the absence of tournaments and improper coaching to fine-tune their talent.
Luckily, the Cameroon Basketball Federation is aware of this and has, since last year, introduced a new programme known as "Conferences". According to the President of the federation, Enanga Barnabas, the "conferences" take experts in basketball to local areas where they train local amateur athletes on the practise of the sport at the elite level. Several localities, will next season, receive the "Conference" caravan whose activities will be extended to include playground competitions. There are also plans to start first division competitions. The provincial competitions will be in the second league. This, no doubt will greatly contribute to close the gap between Yaounde teams and those from the hinterland.
