All Africa Games : What Stakes? (03.10.2003)
Some 6000 athletes from 63 African countries are taking part in the 8th All Africa Games which official begins tomorrow.
1,700. This is the number of medals up for grabs at the 8th All Africa Games. The continental multi-sports event involving all independent African countries officially kicks off in Abuja, political capital of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, tomorrow. The event, held every four years, can be considered Africa’s Olympics. Since its introduction in 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo, the number of events, participating countries and athletes have steadily increased with each edition. This year some 53 countries, 6,000 athletes, 1,200 officials and 2,000 VIPs are expected in Abuja. The athletes will battle it out in 22 sport disciplines: aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, gymnastics, handball, hockey, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, baseball, football, squash racquets, cycling, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, volleyball and karate. For the first time in its history, a women´s soccer tournament will be held. There will also be special games for the handicapped. Cameroon’s 161 athletes will be competing in 14 disciplines. They’ve promised to run faster, jump higher, throw further, fight harder… so as come back with nothing but medals.
The importance of the All Africa Games can no longer be overemphasised. It has been a vital unifying factor in Africa as it consolidates mutual understanding and friendship among citizens of countries that participate. It also provides Africa’s best athletes with an opportunity to display their talents before highly critical spectators since not all of them would have
the opportunity of qualifying for the pinnacle of sport, the Olympic Games. The Games can therefore be rightly considered as a stage for budding athletes; a window into the universe of sports. Excellent performances by unknown African athletes in previous Games has led to world recognition, fame and fortune. Africa´s fastest ever runner, Frankie Frederick of Namibia won double gold at the 1991 Games in Cairo. Kenyan legends Billy Konchellah, John Ngugi and Moses Kiptanui have also graced the games in the past. The Olympic, World and Commonwealth Champion, Maria Mutola of Mozambique and the world vice champion in triple jump, Françoise Mbango of Cameroon, all made their debut at the African Games.
Unfortunately, most of these big names would be absent from the Abuja Games. As Françoise Mbango puts it in an exclusive interview to Cameroon Tribune last week, she has nothing to prove again and would prefer to give up her participation for the All Africa Games to a younger athlete in search of a platform to exalt. Does this therefore mean that the All Africa Games is meant for athletes of lower class? Are the stakes (financial and otherwise) too low for high-profile athletes to take the risk? True, the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa, in charge of organising the Games, has over the years sought to develop sports in the continent so that she might be worthily represented in world sports competitions, especially the Olympic Games. But, until the competition becomes an obligatory passport for African athletes vying for certain international competitions, such as the Olympic Games, it will forever remain just another stage for budding athletes.
