Mboma explains club switch (19.08.2004)
Cameroon`s Patrick Mboma has disclosed that personal difficulties with the manager of Japanese side Verdy forced him to leave the club.
The former African Player of the Year told BBC Sport that the club agreed to release him from his contract after realising that there was little chance of reconciliation between him and Osvaldo Ardiles.
Ardiles, a previous manager of English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur, was a member of the Argentina side that won the 1978 World Cup.
"Verdy released me from my contract after understanding my bad relationship with coach Ardiles," Mboma said.
The striker, who remains in
the J-League with Kobe, admitted that he had been on the verge of joining Qatari side Al Rayan.
"I was really close to signing a deal with Al Rayan.
"But the proposal from Kobe made me change my mind," said the 34-year-old.
Although the Qatari offer was financially superior to what Kobe offered, Mboma said other factors had played a major part in his decision.
"It is not a matter of money, but also one of well being for my family, who are now used to life in Japan."
Scoring 17 goals in 29 games for Verdy, Mboma retired from international football after the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
