Foe and friends reunited (13.06.2005)

IT is now a full two years since Cameroon midfield player Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed in a Confederations Cup semi-final to leave the football world in mourning. Fifa won few points for sensitivity in the aftermath of the tragedy – within an hour Sepp Blatter was barking out instructions that the final must be played – and unfortunately little seems to have changed. Back in 2003, Blatter mooted re-naming the competition to honour Foe and planned some kind of official ceremony to mark his passing, but a spokesman for the governing body told the Sunday Herald last night that there were “no plans” for any commemorative event when the tournament re-opens in Germany this Wednesday.
Compared to the 17 Premiership representatives, the SPL boasts two participants, both of them based in Govan. Sotirios Krygiakos lines up for Greece, whilst Hamed Namouchi is afforded a place in the young and improving Tunisian side who won the African Nations Cup. Namouchi for one hopes common sense prevails regarding a fitting memorial to Foe.
“I remember how I was struck when I watched that match,” the former Cannes player said, “because he was a big man and he was very strong, so to see him fall to the ground like this was terrible. I have some friends who knew him personally and they said he was a good guy. I would like some sort of mark of remembrance, just to show we are still thinking of him. He was a good player and he did a lot for his team.”
Such indignities aside, it is tempting to query the exact purpose of the Confederations Cup, or as its crass Fifa subtitle would have it, the ‘Festival of Champions’. After all, the world’s top footballers are overtired enough without
needlessly extending the season by another fortnight. And okay, so it determines which champion of the world’s football confederations is the strongest, but doesn’t the World Cup do that anyway?
Amazingly, however, this summer’s competition throws up more nations than ever who genuinely do have plenty to gain. Without a competitive international match for two years, with an ignominious performance in Euro 2004 behind them and a World Cup on home soil to contest, Jurgen Klinnsman’s young Germany side are desperate for any competition.
It is also a dry run for the hosts off the field. Hoary old teutonic efficiency should ensure next summer’s World Cup passes off without a hitch, but organisers are still keen to roadtest stadia in Hannover, Leipzig, Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremberg. One of the tournament’s most unappealing fixtures – between Australia and Tunisia – takes place in the new 45,000-capacity stadium in Leipzig, a city whose current team plays in the seventh division.
European champions Greece also have much to prove, now that their miraculous summer of 2004 has given way to World Cup qualifying group doubts behind the Ukraine. Otto Rehhagel may have turned down the chance to coach his native Germany, but will return as a hero.
The two formidable South American challengers seem to be taking things seriously enough. Argentina coach Jose Pekermann has named a seriously strong squad, even if Hernan Crespo and Roberto Ayala are missing. Robinho replaces Ronaldo for Brazil, while more samba soccer will come from Zico’s influence on Japan. Craig Moore is also in the squad for Australia.
Some players at least have their own reasons to delight in the existence of the Confederations Cup.
