Can Indomitable Cubs retain TotalEnergies U-17 AFCON crown? (13.04.2023)
Cameroon´s U17 boys team will travel to Algeria later this month with hopes of retaining the trophy their predecessors won during the last edition of the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2019.
Dorinel Yondjo Matah Angel´s generation are hoping to emulate Steve Mvoue and mates that conquered the continent the 13th edition of the tournament to earn Cameroon´s second continental title.
Cameroon secured qualification for the event in Algeria after defeating Congo in the final of the central Africa zonal tournament.
In the 14th edition of the tournament, Cameroon is pooled in tricky Group C alongside two other previous winners.
2011 champions Burkina Faso and winners in 2015 and 2017 Mali form part of the group which has debutant South Sudan.
Match Schedule (Group C)
Cameroon will play their group stage games in Algeria´s coastal city, Annaba. The defending champions open their competition against debutants South Sudan, before games against Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Coach
Jean Pierre Fiala Fiala will lead his country during the tournament in Algeria.
The 53-year-old former Cameroon international guided his country to reach yet another AFCON tournament as UNIFFAC champions, defeating Congo and Central Africa Republic in two games during the UNIFFAC tournament earlier this year on home soil.
The former Stade Brestois midfielder retired as a footballer in 2000 and immediately switched to management. After stints at a number of local clubs, he was appointed head coach of Cameroon´s U17 team, replacing Anicet Mbarga Foe in August 2022.
This will not be his first AFCON tournament. Coach Fiala was part of Cameroon´s technical staff during the 2021 U20 tournament in Mauritania.
"Our objective is to be among the best four teams and earn qualification for the World Cup. To achieve that, we have to win games. We have to keep working. It´s a good tournament, one which we want to create a lasting impression especially because we are title holders," Fiala said after the draw.
Fiala will get support from Ebwelle Bertin who was appointed last month to join the current staff. The former Cameroon international of the 1990 generation returns to the U17 Lions den which he was part

Players To Watch
There are a number of Cameroon players who displayed glimpses of their brilliance during the regional tournament. Dorinel Yondjo Matah Angel particularly will be keen on replicating the form that made him bag the best player and top scorer during the UNIFFAC tournament.
The 16-year-old EFBC forward scored three and assisted two of Cameroon´s goals in the tournament, inspiring his nation to success in his first tournament.
Yondjo is noted for his goal scoring instincts which have fetched him multiple individual accolades over the years.
Collins Akamba also on the books of EFBC as well as Harouna Djibirin are expected to sparkle in the 12-nations tournament though Yondjo is Cameroon´s main man.
History in the competition
This will be Cameroon´s eighth participation in the competition.
They enter this edition as defending champions, hoping to add a third star on their jersey. The champions of the 2003 and 2019 editions make the knockouts more often than not.
The previous generation were not just cup winners, they also produced the best most valuable player (MVP) and keeper in Steve Regis Mvoue and Ekoi Manfred Mekumba respectively.
That 2019 generation started the tournament with a 2-0 win against Guinea, and defeated the same opponent in the final to claim the crown.
In 2019, Cameroon edged Morocco and Guinea in the group stage, and had a draw against Senegal in the other game. Thomas Liibih´s men defeated Angola on post-match penalties in the semi-final and repeated the trick against Guinea to become African champions again in April 2019 in Dar Es Salaam.
Local Football
For this edition - like the previous editions, a bulk of the Cameroon players have been picked from amateur clubs though they are a few top-flight championship sides whose players are in the provisional squad.
The famous Brasserie Football Academy (EFBC) and Cameroon National Football Academy (ANAFOOT) constitute a bulk of the players while top-flight sides APEJES of Mfou and Cotonsport of Garoua are also represented.
Historically some of the players from this category of the national team go on to play for ambitious local clubs like Cotonsport, Union Sportive of Douala and Canon Yaounde who have a huge history in the CAF interclub competitions.
Ekoi, best goalkeeper in the 2019 tournament keeps goal for top-flight side Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda these days.
