Tigana applies for Nigeria job (15.07.2004)
Nigeria`s Football Association (NFA) says former France international Jean Tigana is a candidate for the national manager`s post.
According to NFA chairman Ibrahim Galadima, the former AS Monaco and Fulham coach, who failed in his recent bid to become coach of France, has formally applied for the job.
"Tigana`s agent has been in contact with the NFA and has expressed his client`s willingness to take up the Super Eagles job.
"We are happy that a coach with such pedigree has shown interest in handling our national team," Galadima told BBC Sport.
The technical committee of the NFA, headed by Suleiman David, will meet on Thursday to look at Tigana`s application and that of four other
coacheswhose details the NFA refused to disclose.
"Tigana will be available for the Eagles job. He has called us to be sure that he is talking directly with the NFA and not with some fraudsters," Suleiman said.
The NFA has said it will announce the name of the successful applicant by the middle of August.
"We have a crucial World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in September and hope to announce our man by then," Galadima said.
Nigeria`s sports ministry and the NFA`s board would have to give their backing to the decision of the technical committee.
Nigeria`s last foreign coach was Dutchman Jo Bonfrere, now in charge of South Korea.
