Atletico after Eto`o (05.05.2004)
Newly-crowned African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto`o Fils from Cameroon could be playing for Atletico Madrid next season.
This is according to speculation in several Spanish newspapers.
"Eto`o has told his closest friends that he wants to play for Atletico," revealed the sports daily Marca, Spain`s biggest selling newspaper.
"The good relations between Atletico and (Eto`o`s current club) Mallorca could ease the transfer," it added.
The Cameroon striker is valued at approximately US $14.5m but the newspaper suggested that several of Atletico`s current squad could be swapped for the 23 year-old striker.
Atletico would fit the bill for the unsettled Eto`o, who has made no secret of his desire to leave struggling Mallorca, who are still fighting against relegation.
"I want to be

witha team that is in the running for titles," he told reporters last month.
The `other` team from the Spanish capital currently lie sixth in the Spanish first division and have a good chance of playing in the Uefa Cup next season.
Although Atletico have endured some difficult times in recent, including a two year spell in the second division, they have an impressive history and the fifth largest budget in Spanish soccer.
Eto`o did his chances of securing a move to a big name club no harm at all at the weekend when he scored both of Mallorca`s goals in their 2-1 win over Malaga, to take his tally to the season to 15, his best ever haul in the top flight of Spanish soccer.
"Between the 22 players on the pitch, there was only one man to watch, the King of Africa," enthused another Spanish sports newspaper As.
