THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given reasons why Cameroun`s Samuel Eto`O Fils was picked ahead of Austin Jay Jay Okocha as the 2003 African Footballer of the year.
CAF`s Director of Communications Mr. Suleiman Habuba, a Nigerian told SportsChampion exclusively that there was nothing controversial about Eto`Os choice.
"Those who are saying Okocha should have won have forgotten that what we are looking at is 2003 and not 2004. Okocha`s performance at the Tunisia 2004 does not count and people appear to have forgotten this fact," Habuba explained.
The CAF image maker stressed that Eto`O was outstanding in the year under review, pointing out that the five
star performance of the Lion`s forward helped Cameroun to play in the finals of the Confederation Cup in France.
"He was also instrumental to his club`s triumph in the Spainish Kings Cup. So, I think the choice of Eto`O is very much in order," he said.
On the award proper, the CAF official said he was satisfied with the way the event went in Yaounde, declaring that the African soccer governing body does not regret moving it out of South Africa for the first time.
"It has been a great show here in Yaounde. In fact, with the way things have gone here, we don`t regret staging it outside South Africa for the first time. Next year, it will definitely move to another African city where the sponsors MTN has a very strong presence," he said.
