Cameroon coach resigns (07.03.2006)
I wish Cameroon and its national team all the success it deserves in the future and I sincerely hope Cameroon will be the first African team to win a major title at world level
Portuguese coach Artur Jorge has quit his post as the coach of Cameroon`s national side.
In a letter sent on Monday to Philippe Mbarga Mboa, the country`s sports minister, Jorge said his decision was a consequence of Mboa`s interference in team matters.
The exclusion of defender Pierre Wome from the squad that went to the last African Cup of Nations finals, reportedly on the orders of Mboa, is a case in point.
Jorge, whose wages were the responsibility of the sports ministry and not Fecafoot, the country`s football federation, also
went unpaid for seven months.
Only a threat by Jorge to resign on the eve of the Cup of Nations compelled the ministry to pay up.
Taking over the Indomitable Lions in January 2005, Jorge`s contract was to expire in July.
While he failed to take the Central Africans to this summer`s World Cup finals - which would have been their fifth consecutive tournament - Jorge lost only one out of nine competitive games in charge.
Not mincing his words while criticising the minister, Jorge praised Fecafoot president Mohamed Iya for his "support and integrity."
He also praised the players, particularly Captain Rigobert Song, Samuel Eto`o and Geremi Njitap for the co-operation they showed him during his stint in charge.
