The great interest demonstrated by the media is a contrary to the lukewarm attitude of Egyptians.
If Egyptians were to demonstrate the same interest in the 25th African Cup of Nations as journalists, then there would be no empty seats on stadiums during matches. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Since the start of the event last Friday, Egyptians have remained lukewarm. Be it in Cairo, Alexandria or Port Said, the population has been indifferent. Even for the opening ceremony and first game between the hosts and Libya, the newly refurbished Cairo International stadium was not full. In effect, during most matches, especially those at the Cairo Military Stadium, the few spectators are none Egyptians who flew into the country to support their teams.
Inas Mohamed Aly, Media Officer of the Local Organizing Committee says the empty seats of the opening match were all reserved by
Libyans. "The seats could not have been empty if they were not reserved. Several Egyptians wanted to see the match but could not because these seats were bought and very expensively", she said. Inas Mohamed nonetheless said the cost of the ticket - 15 Egyptian pounds (about CFA 1,500) and the fact that students were still writing their examination could also explain the low turn out. She however reassured the participating countries that beginning tomorrow, when schools will be on vacation, no seat would be empty in the stands in all the venues of the tournament.
This half-hearted attitude of Egyptians is a great contrast to the excitement demonstrated by the media. Over 1700 media representatives from all over Africa and Europe are covering the event with more press men expected to fly into Egypt for the second and most decisive phase of Africa`s most prestigious football tournament.
