Barca venture into Cameroon (22.06.2005)
Martin Etonge
BBC Sport, Yaounde
Samuel Eto`o has pushed Barcelona, his Spanish club, to finance the construction of a football school in Yaoundé.
Joan Laporta, Barcelona`s president, is in Yaoundé to convince the Cameroonian authorities to join the project.
The school, which will have 1000 students each year, will also have a hospital for people suffering from the AIDS virus.
"We are coming to Yaoundé because Cameroon has a great player called Samuel Eto`o," said Laporta after meeting Philippe Mbarga Mboa, Cameroon`s Sports Minister, on Sunday.
"Cameroon has become famous with our fans thanks to the performance of Eto`o and we hope this project will be realised so that we can recognise the talent of Eto`o," Laporta added.
Eto`o scored 24 goals for Barca last season, helping the Catalans to the Spanish title.
But he was one goal short of becoming the top scorer in La Liga, losing out to Diego Forlan, the Uruguayan who plays for Villareal.

made no clear statement on whether the government was going to help Barcelona FC realise the project.
But Mboa was happy with "the initiative of Barcelona FC to have such a project in Cameroon rather than elsewhere".
Laporta disclosed that several partners were involved in raising money for the project.
Eto`o has received a substantial increase in salary
They include the Barcelona 2000 AIDS Committee, the Foundation Unbele and the Johan Cruyff Foundation.
Proceeds of a high-profile friendly between Cameroon and Barcelona FC, to be scheduled after next year`s World Cup finals, will also finance the project.
But there has been no talk of when construction of the school will begin and its total cost.
Eto`o recently agreed a new deal with Barcelona that will last until 2010, with a significant salary increase from 2.5 Euros to 4 million Euros.
Clubs keen to obtain the services of the two-time African Player of the Year will have to fork out a whopping 150 million Euros.
