Abanda anger over Czech racism (07.12.2004)
Cameroon`s Patrice Abanda has criticised the failure of a Czech football anti-racism campaign after becoming victim of another racist incident.
The government-funded campaign aimed at stamping out racism was launched amid wide publicity three months ago by prime minister Stanislav Gross.
The crusade featured media and educational projects and full-page adverts in newspapers and magazines.
But Abanda, who won a gold medal at the 2000 Cameroon Olympic champion side who now plays with Czech first division side Drnovice, said the campaign had had little effect.
"The only change which I see is the appearance of plaques in stadiums saying `Football yes,
racismno`. That`s all that I have noticed," he said.
"Otherwise, it is the same chants, cries of monkey, banana skins, all that," he added.
"It`s not only with me, but also with other black players who have come to play here."
On Friday Abanda was the victim of racist behaviour from a masseur working for his former club Sparta Prague.
"At the end of the match, as I was leaving the pitch, he said to me in Czech `You blackman, why do you make mistakes` and I said nothing and continued walking. After he said ` You are ill`, I could not take it any more," he recalled.
Drnovice coach Josef Mazura stopped a fight breaking out between the two men.
