Tchato`s bold claim (25.01.2003)
Cameroon`s full back Bill Tchato has arrived at his German club with a bold promise - relegation-threatened Kaiserslautern will not go down as long he is at the club.
Tchato, 27, made the move from French club Montpellier last week.
Kaiserslautern are second from bottom in the Bundesliga.
"I have moved from a club at the bottom of the table to one that is second from the last," he quipped, "but seriously, the club will not go down with me here.
Tchato makes Germany switch
"We have to get three points from our next game against Stuttgart and then we can start moving up the table," said the confident Cameroonian.
Kaiserslautern, who also have Egyptian Hani Ramzy and Congolese defender Nzelo Lembi in their squad, play at home against Stuttgart on Saturday in their first match after the winter break.
"We need gas from the first match and we can do it," he added.
In a German magazine interview, Tchato said he had been seeking a transfer since the World Cup.
"I really wanted to go to either England or Spain but the Bundesliga is also very strong. Kaiserslautern is a big club with strong tradition."
Tchato said he discussed playing in Germany with Cameroon`s coach Winfried Schafer and captain Rigobert Song, who spent half a season with Cologne last season.
