Netherlands beats Cameroon 2-0 in Olympic warmup (01.08.2008)
HONG KONG — Ryan Babel and Roy Makaay each scored late goals Wednesday to give the Netherlands a 2-0 win over Cameroon in men`s football at a four-nation warm-up tournament for the Beijing Olympics.
Babel took a pass from Makaay at the top of the penalty box and scored from close range in the 87th minute to give the Dutch the lead. The Liverpool winger, who came on as a substitute in the second half, then set up Makaay in injury time.
"Makaay is a real hunter. He`s a killer," said Netherlands coach Foppe de Haan. "And Babel, when he has space, is also very dangerous."
Cameroon`s best chance came from Marc Mboua`s attempt from near the edge of the goal box, which went wide.
Makaay, a 33-year-old Feyenoord striker, is one of the three overage players Netherlands is
allowed for the under-23 Olympic competition. Babel is playing for the Netherlands despite pressure from Liverpool to skip the tournament.
"Liverpool was pressuring him to not come here, but he said, `I want to go. And that`s my decision,"` De Haan said.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has said that he is worried Babel will aggravate his ankle injury, which sidelined him from the European Championship.
Netherlands midfielder Royston Drenthe was knocked down by Antonio Ghomsis in the first half, but the Real Madrid player returned to the game after hobbling to the sidelines
