Arsenal defender Lauren agrees to Cameroon return (09.05.2005)
By Tansa Musa
YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Arsenal defender Lauren has agreed to return to the Cameroon team for next month`s World Cup qualifier against Benin after a three-year absence, coach Artur Jorge said on Sunday.
Lauren has refused call-ups to the Cameroon side since the 2002 World Cup finals, where he won the last of his 24 caps, citing incidents of poor management.
Although born in the central African country, Lauren spent most of his life in Spain where his parents were political exiles.
Defender Pierre Wome and Paris St Germain midfielder Modeste Mbami also announced their willingness to return to the
squad after run-ins with the country`s previous coach Winfried Schafer.
Wome, who has scored some spectacular goals for Brescia in Serie A this season, and Mbami were both included in a preliminary squad of 29 for the World Cup African zone Group Three qualifier on June 4.
Cameroon, who will be playing their third match under Portuguese coach Jorge, are in danger of missing out on the World Cup finals for the first time since 1990 when they reached the quarter-finals in Italy.
Cameroon trail leaders Ivory Coast by four points with four matches each remaining. Only the group winners qualify for the 2006 finals in Germany.
