Francophonie Games : Cameroon Set to Shine (05.12.2005)
Some 48 athletes and 11 artists will represent Cameroon at the Games that begin on Wednesday.
The 5th Francophonie Games are expected to begin on Wednesday, December 07, 2005, in Niamey, Niger. True to its policy of answering present at international rendez-vous, Cameroon will be represented in Niamey by a delegation of 77 persons; 48 athletes and 11 artists. The 48 sports persons will compete in five disciplines: boxing, judo, wrestling, football and athletics. The government has gone the extra mile to ensure an effective preparation of the athletes. The boxers and judokas are already in Niamey where they have been undergoing intensive training for the past two weeks. Players of the junior national football team have been fine-tuning their skills at KSA, Douala, the athletics team has been exercising at the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium, while the wrestlers have been flexing muscles at EMIA, Yaounde.
The bulk of Cameroon’s delegation is expected to leave the country today. Sports officials believe the athletes selected are set to lift high the colours of Cameroon in Niamey. Boxing, for example, has offered several victories to Cameroon; including the country’s first medal in 1968 in Mexico by Joseph Bessala. During the last games in Canada, all the four boxers won medals. The six boxers to represent Cameroon in Niamey have vowed to continue the feat. The Judokas who are still fresh from their participation at the world championship in Cairo, Egypt, last September, have also promised to excel. The wrestlers will definitely have a tough time, judging from the fact that traditional wrestling is the most practiced sports in Niger. Besides participating in exhibition fights, the team

of four wrestlers will also be gunning for medals.
Cameroonians will expect a lot from the football team. Their good performance will definitely make up for the present debacle of the senior national team. The players, all but three of whom are playing in the local championship, would therefore have to work hard in order to bring home something more than the bronze which the junior team grabbed at the third Francophonie Games in Madagascar in 1997. Meanwhile, in Athletics, the nation will be waiting for the birth of another Mbango. The 2004 Olympic gold medallist in Triple Jump won two medals in Long and Triple jump at the last Francophonie Games in Ottawa Hull, Canada. Although she would not be present in Niamey, Cameroon’s athletics team have pledged to shine.
Culture will also be on stage in Niamey. The country will compete in four arts domains - music, photography, painting and sculpture. The artists were selected last year during a test in Yaounde supervised by an international jury of the organising committee of the Francophonie Games. In music, the group Black Roots will represent Cameroon in Niamey. The group of eight will present a mixture of all rhythms of Cameroonian culture. Ngon Fabrice of Cameroon Tribune will defend the colours of the country in Photography, Christine Tsala in Painting and Apolonie Enguome in Sculpture. Apolonie Engoume is the only artist in the delegation who has participated in the competition before. She was present during the 2001 Games in Canada. The others will be participating for the first time. Officials of the Ministry of Culture say they are confident in the team, adding that they are capable of fetching gold and glory for the country.
