Schafer linked with Germany (19.07.2004)
Cameroon coach Winfried Schafer is the latest name in the frame to succeed Rudi Voller as manager of the German national team.
The search to replace Voller, who stepped down after Germany crashed out of the 2004 European championship in the first round, was reopened when former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld unexpectedly turned down the job.
Schafer`s contract with the Indomitable Lions runs until after the 2006 World Cup.
But Franz Beckenbauer, speaking in his capacity as vice-president of the German Football Federation (DFB), told the German newspaper Bild: "Winni Schafer is also one of our
candidates."
Schafer joins a group that is believed to include PSV Eindhoven`s Dutch coach Guus Hiddink and Denmark coach Morten Olsen.
Cameroon face a tough task trying to qualify for the World Cup as they have both Egypt and the Ivory Coast in their group.
Schaefer has had a turbulent relationship with Cameroon`s football authorities. He once accused them of "lacking organisation and honesty."
The German, who led Cameroon to African Cup of Nations glory in 2002 as well as to the World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea that year, has also complained of not being paid for his work.
