Schaefer refuses to step down (08.02.2004)
Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer has insisted he will not step down despite his team`s Cup of Nations elimination to Nigeria.
The defending champions lost their crown with a 2-1 defeat in Monastir, with Nigeria`s John Utaka scoring the decisive goal.
Pressed by journalists as to whether he would resign following the defeat, Schaefer replied "Why?" on several occasions.
"We still have great potential," he added.
The German coach has been with the Indomitable Lions for more than two years.
Under him, the side has won the 2002 Cup of Nations in Mali as well as reached the
finalof the 2003 Confederations Cup.
Schaefer faced similar calls to quit after Cameroon`s disappointing World Cup campaign in 2002, when the Indomitable Lions went out in the first round.
The German came to Tunisia with a policy of steadily introducing new players into the team, a strategy that has had mixed results.
In particular, the defence has struggled to cope with the loss of Lauren and Raymond Kalla through retirement.
Before the Nigeria defeat, Cameroon - who as holders did not have to qualify - had won the last two Cup of Nations, and were riding a 15-match unbeaten streak.
